No PSPhone…For NowAuthor: Pete Haas

This week a representative for Sony addressed rumors that a PSP phone was in the works by stating no such device was in the works. "We do have talks with other arms of the Sony family about various topics but I can confirm we are not currently working together on the creation of a PlayStation Phone." Will it stop the rumors? Probably not.
Given the huge success of the iPhone, it seems natural to many that Sony would integrate a phone into its portable gaming console. Sony’s given the rumor monkeys plenty to chew on, too. Sony Computer Entertainment co-chief operating officer Jim Ryan supposedly told the Indian Economic Times, ”PlayStation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson. Convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible.” In June it was uncovered that Sony had secured a patent for a portable device with a display that rotates ninety degrees when switching between its “phone and/or email function” and its “game and/or camera function.” Even if they’re not planning on manufacturing the device just yet, it’s clear that they’ve put a lot of thought into it. Even if you’re like me and like your phones to just be…phones, you have to admit a PSPhone is a pretty cool idea. Note that the Sony rep only said they currently weren’t working on it. It’s somewhere on their “to do” list, though. I imagine Sony is waiting for PS3 to get its legs before they roll this project out. Until then, just duct tape your phone to your PSP. |
