Old Spice Experience Challenge Is Underway...Yay?

Old Spice Experience Challenge Is Underway...Yay? Nearly a year ago we lamented the Old Spice Experience Challenge on the 360. It sounded like a marketing gimmick of the worst kind. One that was invading our precious gaming space. And you know what, it might have been. It was also a hell of a lot of fun. The issue was the Gamerwhoring challenge catered to the hardcore players out there. Those of us who’ve made finishing titles with tiny Gamerscores an art form were left holding our soiled britches at the end of the competition.

Rather than use the Xbox dashboard to promote the Challenge, Old Spice has partnered with 360Voice.com, an online community of gamers. It’s also the hilarious way to find out what your 360 was up to while LIVE was incapacitated during the holidays. Turns out my 360 fears dragons and other pets. You should start seeing Old Spice in relation to your 360 soon, if you haven’t already. No seriously, where the hell is this campaign at? It supposedly launched last month, but as far as I can tell no one cared. Sort of like no one cared that the dog kept dry humping my 6-year-old nephew during the “Holiday” party. I’m not paying those therapy bills, and I disagree that the kid “liked it.” Sick freaks.

Personally I just purchased some new deodorant, and have no need to be searching. But those of you perusing blogs dedicated to antiperspirants might have noticed odd images discussing gift cards, challenges and Microsoft Points. Have no fear; we gamers are just as smelly as you could possibly hope. You’ll like the challenge of stopping our stink; you’re on your own in determining who the winner of that event is though.

The formation of challenges this time around has been updated to make it accessible to the casual gamer just as much as the hardcore. There will be four tiers involved, and all you have to do to get involved is find enough friends to compete against. You can have your own little challenges with those you know, trust and love. Hopefully these are also the players who don’t laugh at you when you throw a flash bang at the start of a COD4 online match. For your convenience, we have the Tier requirements listed off below.

Tier 1

  • Requirements: 7 day challenge, 5 gamers minimum
  • $20 Amazon.com gift card
  • 1,600 Xbox LIVE Microsoft Points
  • $20 Best Buy gift card

Tier 2

  • Requirements: 14 day challenge, 10 gamers minimum
  • $50 Best Buy gift card
  • 4,000 Xbox LIVE Microsoft Points
  • Xbox LIVE Gold Membership (1 year)

Tier 3

  • Requirements: 30 day challenge, 15 gamers minimum
  • $100 Best Buy gift card
  • 8,000 Xbox LIVE Microsoft Points
  • 6 month GameFly subscription

Tier 4

  • Requirements: 30 day challenge, 20 gamers minimum
  • Year long GameFly subscription
  • Xbox 360 HD DVD Player

The challenges are under the player’s control. You can gamble your Gamerscore points across multiple brackets, or put them all in one high-stakes kamikaze run to the top of the leader board. You can get all the official rules at the Old Spice Experience Challenge website.

With the ease of challenging your friends via Xbox LIVE on a regular basis, there doesn’t seem to be much to the challenge. Sure, you can win some prizes. And hell, they’re vastly improved over those from last time around. But you still have to dedicate yourself to quite a bit of gaming, and most of us would rather have fun while playing online. Announcing to the world that my Gamerscore didn’t increase enough to earn a $50 gift card is not my idea of fun. You know what is? Blowing up my new friend Sven in a game of Team Fortress 2…I love the sound of accented bitching and moaning.
