Original Fallout Designer's Impressions On Fallout 3 The first two Fallout games were made by Interplay and Black Isle Studios but the third, coming nearly a decade later, has been developed by Bethesda Softworks. So what does Tim Cain, one of the designers of the first game, think of the new installment?

"It's not necessarily the direction I would've gone, but I can tell you I have my Fallout 3 pre-ordered," Cain told Edge Online. "I want my life-sized Pip-Boy. I'm going to be playing that at the end of the month."

He didn't give many details on what he would've done differently if he had another crack at the series, but he did say this: "The biggest problem I have with expanding the game is that the original games were designed to make you feel like you were one of the last people left on Earth. And with Fallout 3 and the online version, I'm curious about how they'll handle making the game not feel too crowded--making it feel like there's not much life left out there after the war."

A fair point but it doesn't seem like Fallout 3 is expanding the world too much - it's already been established that there were Vaults all over the country to shield people from the nuclear war. As with the post-apocalyptic Southern California depicted in the first two games, the ruins of the D.C. area depicted in Fallout 3 are going to feel desolate just by way of the fact that there's maybe a few hundred people in this area where millions used to live. Plus, the D.C. area, being the seat of power for the (albeit ruined) country, provides unique story opportunities - just as Southern Cali allowed players a glimpse at the ruins of the entertainment industry.

Fallout 3 will arrive in stores on October 28th for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
