If I was sitting on a game like Far Cry 2, I'd make sure to show it off at every occasion, and that's what Ubisoft has been doing. They unveiled a new trailer at Penny Arcade Expo that shows off the "immersive gameplay" of the shooter.
The video, narrated by Creative Director Clint Hocking, displays how they plan to engross the gamer. It's not only the pretty graphics - though they are extremely impressive. I'd go so far as to say Africa hasn't been rendered so beautifully since uh...God made it?
But yeah, player immersion is more than just graphics in this game. Far Cry 2 is full of realistic touches. When your character takes damage, you must inject yourself with a syringe to patch up small wounds and perform more extensive first-aid for serious injuries. Your weapons will jam and eventually break if you use them for too long. Cars can also break down from extended use, but luckily you can pop open the hood and repair them.
Getting in and out of a car is a fluid animation, by the way. The game sticks rigidly to its first-person perspective. To look at your map and compass, your character actually pulls them out in-game, rather than the game cutting to a separate menu screen. Some of these small touches might not bowl you over but Ubisoft is hoping that when they're all added up, they'll result in a very engaging game. Based on the footage I've seen so far, they might be right.
