After the long wait, the less-than-hyped promotional campaign, and lots of long lines, the PS3 is officially available across North America. As of November 17th, Sony rolled out 700 PS3's at their official store, stacked high and waiting to be plucked up by customers wearing wristbands that guaranteed them a unit. Other gamers who have been waiting since E3's 2005 can now walk into their local retailer, fight off a horde of sweaty gamers, and purchase a PS3 for only $599.
One of the most highly awaited consoles of all time has made onto store shelves, featuring the new Sixaxis controller technology for a Playstation console, and the greatly anticipated Blu-Ray player. In addition to this, the Playstation 3 can output HD with a supposed standard of 1080i, with ease. Sony has finally emerged into the next-generation, but not without climbing a very rocky hill.
The unveiling was a quiet affair...and not just in America. While the PS3 received some promotion, it was far more tame in comparison to the PS2's launch. A launch, I might add, that garnered some sellers on ebay nearly $5000 before it even came to American retailers. Not to mention, the PS2 was all over the news a year before it was destined to launch. The PS3 on the other hand, well it received some welcoming gestures. But I suppose Sony is playing it a bit more cautious. Simply given the price tag, the negative press, and the raving skeptics lurching in the shadows, just waiting to pounce on Sony after they hear of technical flaws or consumer complaints.
Even so, according to a report on gameindusty.biz, “...at least four PS3's were stolen from a store in California by armed men on Thursday morning, while three eager consumers queuing for consoles on Thursday were mugged when they left their camping spot.” Not a happy thing to happen, but least we know consumers are craving the new big black box from Captain 'S'...Sony, that is.
Well, hopefully the worse is over for Sony, and maybe now they can bath in the success that might be the PS3. You can purchase a Playstation 3 at your local retailer for the suggested price of $499 (with a 20gig HD) or $599 (includes 60gig HD).
