It seems a lot of you weren’t too fond of the article about Halo 3's cooperative mode being a cop-out. Well, that horse is dead and burned and there’s no reason to go back and kick it in the gonads any more. Instead, we can focus on the game that all you readers ranted on in the Halo 3 article, Haze. A new developer diary treks through the cooperative modes present in the game and how they’ll function.
First and foremost, in comparison to Halo 3 I must say that Haze has better features on paper. Now before you fanboys go all crazy...I still don’t know how well Haze behaves in-game. I do like, however, that they are trying to do things with the shooter genre that not only expands on a storyline that involves more than just one person saving the universe, but actually interjects moral and social aspects into the plot. I like that.
The game is also expanding on gameplay that should have stayed in shooters since the likes of Perfect Dark or Dead to Rights. I’m talking about disarming enemies. I don’t know why so many shooter games have abandoned the option to disarm enemies, but I’m glad it’s coming back in Haze. Also, the inclusion of AI that has exploits, personalities and tactics are always a welcome addition to the shooter genre. I think all too often developers feel that they can satiate the market with an action game that offers little to nothing new in the AI department, just because they can. It’s a method that needs to stop.
Haze is also offering up a four-player co-op mode that can be played online or offline (much like Warhawk) and that’s something that’s not worth complaining about at all. So long as the option is there that’s all that matters. But for you frag junkies, Haze will also feature standard deathmatch and other online multiplayer modes to keep the replay values sailing high, outside of the story modes. Again, I have to say that adding the standards are what keeps gamers coming back for more and Free Radical at least seems to have that concept laid out like a Hollywood youngster who has just been introduced to the mini-bar.
Now I hate to be the guy that steps in the shoe prints that says “Another Halo Killer”, but I’m darn sure that Haze could be it, especially after you watch the following footage. I’m not advocating that Ubisoft or Free Radical have an awesome, instant "must buy" game on their hands, but I can attest to the fact that Haze looks much better on paper than Halo 3. But enough prattle. You can check out the developer diary footage below. Enjoy.
