PSP Catching PS3 In Monthly Hardware Sales It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who follows the NPD charts, given that the PSP seems to be broadening its audience while the PS3 has been relegated to an alcove of hardcore gamers. But don’t just read the headline and jump to conclusions. Check out the numbers first.

VG Chartz has posted their predictions for the official NPD numbers of February. The actual NPD chart will be due out on March 19th. You can be sure we’ll be eagerly awaiting the numbers when they roll in. Until then, the numbers for the PS3 hardware sales, for the month of February, are estimated by VG Chartz to fall within this figure for North America: 226,909.

The PSP also got some numerical loving by VG Chartz’ predictions for the month of February with these hardware sales figures: 210,118. That’s right folks, there’s just over a 10k difference between the PSP and the PS3 in hardware sales. While these are estimates for the month, you can expect very similar results from the official NPD chart.

What’s more is that the PSP didn’t have any big North American releases for the month of February…none that were advertised everywhere and received years of hype. Perhaps a lot of gamers are waiting on buying a PS3 and KillZone 2 combo, and those figures might appear on the sales charts for the month of March. Otherwise, it just kind of looks like KillZone 2 was only popular enough within the hardcore gamers’ circle and those who already purchased a PS3. What’s also startling is that the PS3 didn’t receive any immediate boosts in hardware sales prior to KillZone 2’s launch. This is opposed to the sales spike for the PS3 that ushered in the release of Metal Gear Solid 4.

I guess we can all safely say that KZ2, like LBP, is no MGS4. Still, February looks to be a good month for positive software sales, despite the recent tumult the gaming industry encountered on the stock market, as reported by TheGameReviews [via Platform Nation].
