It would seem that Activision is bound and determined to stick to their new mantra of releasing only franchise games. What other explanation could there be for dropping Ghostbusters and still going on to do another History game? The latest, Civil War: Secret Missions, is like a sequel to the first Civil War. Or maybe not. Really, who cares? The idea has so much potential to be a fantastic, and realistic, look at the battles of our nation. I know quite a few people who would kill their brother for a chance to play a quality title that takes history seriously.
In History Civil War: Secret Mission players will play the role of disturber for both the North and South. You’ll be tasked with raiding trains, stopping enemy supply lines, and all the mischievous duties of the covert mission. Being a History Channel game the factions you join up with are based on real groups such as Grant’s Secret Service and Sheridan’s Scouts.
I’m not convinced there’s no place for this type of game in the industry. Hell, gaming as a business has grown exponentially over the years and we’re starting to take it seriously as an entertainment medium. Past iterations in the franchise have proven the current formula to be unsuccessful, and even worse just plain boring. Perhaps Secret Mission will change that, but I wouldn’t bet my last musket ball on it.
