Here we all thought GTA IV would herald in a new era: one where the Wii is not quite so dominant. But now the NPD numbers are out for the month of April, and Wii decimated the competition once again. Hell, it wasn’t even close as the Wii sold more than the 360 and PS3 combined. And that’s also an increase from last month (March was a five week total while April was only four).
The Wii held onto the top spot with 714,200 units sold. Nintendo took number two with the DS selling 414,800, not a shabby number at all. 360 and PS3 ran neck and neck, coming in at 188,000 and 187,100 respectively. Smash Bros continued on with its strong sales, but it was Mario Kart Wii and the racer’s 1.12 million units (better than GTA IV on PS3) that likely pushed Wii so far ahead.
Here’s how the consoles break down, followed by the top 10 selling games for April:
Wii 714,200
Nintendo DS 414,800
PSP 192,700
Xbox 360 188,000
PlayStation 3 187,100
PlayStation 2 124,400
360 GTA IV 1.85 million
Wii Mario Kart w/ wheel 1.12 million
PS3 GTA IV 1.00million
Wii Play 360,000
Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl 326,000
PS3 Gran Turismo 5: Prologue 224,000
DS Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness 202,000
DS Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time 202,000
