A new version of the multiplayer browser Battle.Net will debut with Starcraft II. How will it be superior to the previous version? Well, it'll be able to hit you up for money.
During a BlizzCon 08 panel discussion, Diablo 3 director Jay Wilson said, "We are looking to monetize Battle.Net so that we get to keep making these games and updating features. We kind of have to.” Blizzard wants to avoid putting in a subscription but yes, some as-yet-unknown features will cost money.
Apparently Activision really likes the word "monetize". They've been using it a lot lately, first with Guitar Hero: World Tour, then with Call of Duty: World At War, and now Battle.Net. Guess they've settled on a strategy for their top franchises from here on out.
Quite possible the paid content for Battle.Net is something superfluous, like custom avatars for the browser. If they tried to sell special items or some such, an angry mob with pitchforks would gather. It's also possible Wilson was talking about additional episodes for the game. Whatever it is, be sure to keep your wallet handy.

I don't like the new activision strategy, there doing pre-order map packs with there shooters now so the game is broken out of the box unless you pre-order or throw down more cash. Why would blizzard join with these hacks? I am boycotting activision till they change there consumer rape policy.
Blizzard and their games are highly rated here in poland, but I don't think that this idea with pay to play will lift off... The features would have to be so good, that they would knock private servers on the head (which I don't see happening), otherwise this is an up-hill struggle. From this point of view you could think that it is pretty pointless to apply a new battlenet, since it works and is still fully functional (Hider - you pay for the game, but not battlenet)
As long as they only charge money for extra features i dont care but multi-player online must be free or i say F#(k your game lol
here are some idea for blizzard on what to charge for:
1. avatars
2. HARDCORE RESPAWNING (lets face it any one who plays hardcore would pay 10$ for another chance even more so if they were like a lvl 90 and lag just F#(ked the shit out of them lol)
3. trade market
4. Not online play (they would lose over half of diablo players i know i wont pay to play)
This is pathetic! Why should Blizzard charge for online play when evry other company in the freaking world doesn't? (xbox live excluded since Microsoft are money hungry pigs anyway)
I don't mind paying for the game disc, but I won't stand paying 40 EXTRA bucks a month (thats what WoW costs in my country), so they can add useless features from time to time and fix and patch things that shoud have been corrected before the realease.
I really hope they were just testing the waters with these comments beacause I would be really sad if I had to stop myself from enjoying a promising game (Diablo 3) because of those greedy bastards.
Don't make me pirate your game Blizzard... I REALLY don't want to...
