Professor Designs RPG Class

Professor Designs RPG Class I can't complain about the course offerings from my alma mater - I took classes on wine, sex, and rock music - but I'm a little jealous of the students at Wabash College in Indiana. Michael Abbott, a Professor of Theater at the school, is planning a course on the history of role-playing video games.

Abbott is currently whittling down a long list of RPG's on his blog, The Brainy Gamer that he's considering for the course. Ultimately he'll select "15 games that provide a historical overview" of the genre. He's looking for feedback from gamers so look over the list and tell him what you think. The list would be handy for your next trip to your local gaming store bargain bin, too.

Of course, the class isn't just a bunch of students playing video games - there's going to be a lot of assigned reading too (pwned). On Friday, Abbott posted the names of books and journal articles that will serve as a bibliography for the course. As it turns out, there's a lot of academic writing on video games; the list contains over thirty books. Obviously he wants to pare down this list as well so on the off-chance you've read Fantasy play-worlds : A study of culture, communication and technology as they intersect in computer fantasy roleplaying games, tell him whether you think the book's worth teaching.

RPG's share a lot of DNA with other story-telling mediums like films or novels so I suppose they'd be the easiest video games to teach. Will other professors launch courses based on other genres in the future? "SOC 217: Virtual Gladiators and the Culture of Deathmatches," perhaps?
