A remake of the World War I combat flight simulator Red Baron, currently available for PC, is coming to Playstation Network. Sierra Online announced today that Stainless Studios' Red Baron Arcade will be available for download on PSN on September 18th.
Some of you might be too young to remember the original game, which came out in 1990. I'd say it's the best World War I game ever but...I honestly can't think of any other WWI games off the top of my head. I guess trench warfare doesn't really make for good deathmatching. Maybe we'll see more of this conflict in video games now that WW2 has been thoroughly strip mined by developers.
Anyway, in Red Baron, the player is a fighter pilot for France, Britain, or Germany. You'll undertake a variety of missions, including patrols, dogfights, zeppelin hunts, and bomber escorts. As you rise through the ranks, you'll also get a chance to test your skills against famous aces from the WWI era. French/British pilots will eventually square off against the Red Baron himself, while German pilots...battle Snoopy, I guess.
Red Baron Arcade for the PSN will have 36 single-player missions in total and allow you to fly 20 historical, customizable aircraft. As with the PC version of the game, the PSN port will support multiplayer for up to eight players. Sierra also provided a trailer to reassure gamers that the graphics have come a long way since 1990.
