Red Faction: Guerrilla looks pretty incredible and Volition knows it. According to lead designer James Hague, the game's "super-dynamic" action and advanced destructible environments "ruining other games for people."
"There's a lot of games out now that are very, very pretty, they're next-gen, they're beautiful games, but they're set-pieces," Hague told Eurogamer. "Everything was custom-built just to look nice. While other games companies were going toward pretty-but-static, we wanted to go toward fully-dynamic for everything. It's a very different technical direction from where other people are going." It's true that some shooters feel like a museum - "look, don't touch." This seems to happen a lot with Unreal Engine 3 games in particular. Not all shooters are like that, though. One notable exception is Battlefield: Bad Company and its Frostbite Engine, which will power the upcoming sequel and Battlefield 1943. Guerilla is pretty spectacular from a technical standpoint, though. It sports destructible environments, giant robot walkers, and jet packs among other things. As you can see from the weapons and vehicles trailer released a couple weeks back, it's very easy on the eyes too. It'll be released on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in June. |
