What more could you want than roaming the streets of Basin City freely, busting heads in Kadie’s Club Pecos or making connections with the Magliozzi family. Sin City the movie was released in theaters two years ago, but the buzz hasn’t worn off. With the graphic novel collection still topping charts and a sequel to the film possibly coming in the near future, it was only a matter of time before someone licensed the rights to make a video game. That someone was publisher Red Mile Entertainment.
Red Mile, with Frank Miller, has been working on ideas to throw into the game for a few months now and everyone seems pretty excited about what is coming forward. It’s very tempting for the game to be just another licensed product that is based on a movie or a book, and only straying because there wasn’t enough to fill an entire game. According to the publisher that is not what Sin City the game will be. Flint Dille, who is overseeing the scripting process, has said that it will be a new story with some new characters. The most exciting part of this project is that the Unreal Engine 3 will power the game. UE3 is an excellent choice. Taking into account some of the gritty games that Unreal has already brought to life seem to make it the only logical choice for the inevitable head stomping and massive gun play for the noir streets of Sin City. Right now I’m imagining an over the shoulder rampage with Gladys. Red Mile has decided to hand the property over to Union Entertainment for development. After the dismal and unimaginative game play of The Darkness - another graphic novel turned video game - fans of Sin City might be screaming for blood. By “might be” I mean “better be.” There were so many things wrong with The Darkness. As a comic book fan as well as a gamer I was angry when I started the ten-minute opening scene. I knew what to do with the shotgun, but the game was as baffled by it as a caveman with a digital watch. Even after getting the supernatural powers of The Darkness I still found the contents of my nose more entertaining. Of course this sort of partnership can be expected from the same publishers who thought that Jackass: The Game was a good idea. My fondest hope is that I don’t load up Sin City in the near future and the first mission is going to Old Town and spending fifteen minutes trying to unclasp a hooker’s bra only to find out that it was Marv in a dress. |
