Resident Evil 5 had an opening weekend that would make any film studio happy. Capcom announced today that the survival horror game has shipped over four million copies worldwide.

RE5 was released on Friday in North America and PAL territories. The game hit stores in Japan on March 5th. Street Fighter IV, another highly anticipated sequel from Capcom, shipped two million within a week of its North American and European release last month. The big gap between RE and SF sales goes to show you the beastly amount of money in the action genre. They're definitely eating well over at Capcom right now.

The press release also notes that the RE series has sold over 40 million copies to date. The series debuted in 1996. Last week, Capcom announced the next RE game is a Wii rail shooter named Darkside Chronicles.
