Even die-hard fans of the Resident Evil series have to agree that the storyline's gotten a bit convoluted. Capcom agrees, and they're going to wipe the slate clean after Resident Evil 5.

This revelation comes from the introduction to 1UP's week of Resident Evil 5 coverage, which started today: "In what is destined to be the first genuinely epic game of 2009, Resident Evil 5 is practically guaranteed to be the last of its kind, with the game's producer, Jun Takeuchi, assuring us that a reboot is in order for the inevitable Resident Evil 6."

You've piqued our interest, sirs. The full interview with Takeuchi will be published on Wednesday so we should find out more specifics about this reboot then. I assume they mean a reset of the storyline but we could see some big changes in gameplay mechanics as well. The survival horror genre that RE helped establish is really on the ropes these days, with most games in the genre leaning heavily toward action. Again, we'll have to wait 'til Wednesday to hear Takeuchi's ideas on how survival horror can get her groove back.
