Piranha Bytes’ upcoming RPG for PC and Xbox 360 is looking mighty fine. Already it’s being compared to the dev’s highly praised Gothic series. Yet for this game to house similarities to JoWood’s Gothic 3, this trailer sure does a good job of hiding those similarities. What this city-life trailer doesn’t do is pull any punches on the bore-factor.
Sometimes environmental trailers are cool because they lay out a premise for how the AI acts and reacts, or how the scenery is affective for weather or a change in the mood of the atmosphere. Sometimes environmental trailers can be entertaining. This trailer, however, aims for something high but misses the margin by a long shot, resulting in a rather stolid display of a beautifully rendered city.
Of course, not every trailer is going to be worthy of being one of the coolest trailers of the year. So I’m forgiving that the only thing we see in this trailer are some medieval corridors and a courtyard our two. But don’t let the trailer disappoint your interest in the actual game. Risen is actually quite impressive sounding, with a large world to explore and an almost Elder Scrolls type journey to unfold.
