It’s no wonder that some music artists are looking at Rock Band as a possible distribution model in the future for new singles, or even whole albums. Since the game’s release on November 20, 2007 there have been 6 million songs downloaded. And while the disc only shifts with a portion of what Guitar Hero 3 has, none of them are throwaway indy bands. And now Rock Band boasts over 125 different songs, with more and more coming each week. Next week, for instance, will see the release of six new Boston tracks.
"Thank you to the music lovers who have helped Rock Band reach an incredible milestone of over 6 million purchased downloads at such an early stage,” stated Paul DeGooyer, SVP DVD, Gaming and Audio, MTV in a press release this week. “The success of Rock Band downloadable content to date firmly reinforces our vision and its potential as a platform for music discovery. By empowering players with the ability to customize their Rock Band library with a rapidly growing selection of rock artists and songs on a weekly basis and adding great new features such as the in-game music store, we are thrilled to give fans more ways to enhance and enjoy their Rock Band experience.”
If that weren’t enough, MTV Games and Harmonix are answering our prayers and giving us previews of the new content. Not only that, but they’ve gone a step further and will be providing an in-game store via an update over Xbox LIVE and PlaystationNetwork. We’ve been asking for a preview feature since the game released last fall. Perhaps Harmonix had more ambitious plans than 15 second audio clips. The Rock Band Music Store will use an in-game interface to allow players to preview purchases and put together the best library in the history of their band. You can sort by all the usual key phrases: Artist, Song Title, Genre, Albums, Pack and more. A few other fixes are included in the update.
