Word on the street is that Backbone Entertainment's upcoming DS remake of classic hack-and-slash arcade game Gauntlet is no more. It's a sad day for red warriors who want to shoot the food.

An unnamed source "familiar with the development of the title" has told Joystiq that the game's been deep-sixed. Joystiq was following up on observations by GoNintendo that the game's listing had been pulled from GameStop's website and that Amazon had informed customers that the game was cancelled.

There's been no word from Backbone or publisher Eidos on the subject. The game was first announced in September and there's been little news about it since then. Backbone's website doesn't even work anymore. Doesn't look too good.
