Rumor: Virtual Gaming Conventions Coming To Xbox 360 Xbox 360 owners lacking travel money might be able to go to gaming events anyway. The console could soon allow you to virtually attend conventions for free.

This "Virtual Video Game Convention Service" was teased in a consumer survey taken by a Destructoid reader. It would allow you to digitally attend gaming events like E3, GamesCom, and BlizzCon. You'd stroll through a virtual show floor with your Xbox Live Avatar and watch trailers, keynote addresses, and other presentations by various publishers and developers. They'd even let you download and play demos of the games on display.

A gaming convention without crowds or fees? Sounds great, almost "this is never going to happen" great. It seems technically possible but it depends on the cooperation of these conventions. Would they really let fans virtually attend them for free? If you wanted to watch streaming footage of BlizzCon 2009 online or through DirecTV, you had to pay $40. It seems like Activision Blizzard would be surrendering a lot of potential money by waiving fees.

There's also the matter of getting game companies to produce virtual convention content. Not all of them are going to be comfortable letting you download their show floor demo. They prefer to polish them up a bit and then release them through Xbox Live or PSN months after these events.

But hey, if Microsoft can accomplish even part of what's promised here, I'm on board. They're just gauging interest right now so it's not clear if and when it could go live.
