Selling GTA On Nintendo Platforms Is A Bust?

published: 2009-03-23 18:54:41
NPD for February hit and hit hard. Recently Blend Games had the news up about Nintendo lavishly owning up every other console on the chart for the month. Yet, despite the hardware sales, a certain franchise actually managed to under-perform and land in a rough number 6 spot.

Some people might say number 6 is not under-performing, but when you consider that this is Grand Theft Auto we’re talking about…yeah, I’d consider that covered in the “underperformers” category. If this was a game by Southpeak, Aksys, Atlus or Paradox Interactive, then the article would definitely be reversed, hailing said game as a sleeper-hit.

According to an article on The Game Reviews, James Barr points out that maybe GTA just isn’t Nintendo platform material.

Barr states, “It’s not like Chinatown wars received little marketing across the UK. Television ads, as well magazine covers and newspaper pull outs, were all displaying Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS.” He goes on to say, “With the amount of DS’s sold in the UK, one would think that such a big title should perform better, but it goes to show what demographic really purchased DS’s.”

I guess this just goes to prove that Nintendo gamers are majority casual and even more-so, not really into gaming. Based on the Wii Fit sales, they also really want to get into shape. Nevertheless, GTA Chinatown Wars sixth place debut for the Nintendo DS is either a sign that people are tired of Grand Theft Auto, or DS gamers just aren’t ready for something mature.
