Sim Creator Will Wright Leaving EA
Will Wright, creator of The Sims, Sim City and Spore, will be leaving EA Maxis soon. No, Activision didn't drive a truck full of money up to his house.
According to Develop, Wright will found a new company called Stupid Fun Club. EA will be an equity investor in the new company, which will focus its energies on developing new intellectual properties for video games, movies, TV, toys, and the Internet. EA will naturally hold the rights to develop video games based on the IP's that Stupid Fun creates.
"Stupid Fun Club will explore new possibilities that are emerging from this sublime chaos and create new forms of entertainment on a variety of platforms," said Wright. "In my twelve years at EA, I've had the pleasure to work alongside some of the brightest and most talented game developers in the industry and I look forward to working with them again in the near future."
EA Maxis, formerly Maxis, was founded by Wright and Jeff Braun in 1987 and acquired by EA in 1997. The Sims franchise was launched in 2000 and has been a huge earner for EA over the years with over 100 million copies sold. Smart financial move on EA's part to keep their hand in Wright's projects.
