Now that Sega has let some images and video out on the next Sonic game that is not a BioWare RPG we can begin to assess whether its time to let the blue speedster go. For the past 10-15 years Sonic has made appearances in mediocre title after mediocre title. It’s been enough to make me question whether those old Sonic we actually any fun. Perhaps I am a victim of nostalgia, and I remember the games fondly when I should not.
But I’ve played those classic 2D platformers in recent times, and they are still fantastic. So it was with trepidation that I watched the video below. When would I see Sonic twirling laser blasters? Perhaps he’ll have a “cool” new super power like turning into a mauve version of himself that has the power to spit sunflower seeds at that nogoodnik Dr. Robotnik? What is actually there is a relief.
The video showcases gameplay footage, and there’s a large chunk that is shown from the 2D perspective. That is the way Sega needs to do a Sonic game. Bring back the classic sounds, music, bumpers and speed. Take us on a thrill ride through the levels in a 2D platformer with epic speed. Rather than force a 3D adventure on the masses, let the camera roam throughout the environment while I control Sonic as I remember.
Just one niggling question. What the hell is up with the picture to the right?
