Like everyone else who plays games, I just don’t have enough copies of Sonic the Hedgehog. This morning we received word from SEGA that the original blue speed demon is now available to buy from the iTunes music store for play on your iPod. I can’t say how well the controls translate, but I do have a copy ready to peruse as soon as I get back to my actual iPod. I thought about trying to get it to work on my Shuffle, but realized that is just a stupid idea.

The video game icon is available now for purchase at the iTunes Store for $4.99. And if you already have it for the Virtual Console or XBLA, then you can go ahead and give the game as a gift. You’ll be able to use the traditional game soundtrack, or a playlist of your own choosing. I’d like to play a little Sonic while Lilac Wine plays in the background, that could be interesting. But the general recommendation would be to keep the standard soundtrack.

You can buy Sonic the Hedgehog for the new Nano with video, the iPod classic and the fifth generation iPod from iTunes. No love for iPod Touch or iPhone folks though.
