LucasArts will be shutting down several servers for MMORPG Star Wars: Galaxies soon. They intend to zap 12 of the current 25 servers by mid-October.

The announcement was made on the official forums. The following servers will be closed by October 15th:
  • Corbantis
  • Europe-Infinity
  • Intrepid
  • Kauri
  • Kettemoor
  • Lowca
  • Naritus
  • Scylla
  • Tarquinas
  • Tempest
  • Valcyn
  • Wanderhome
LucasArts attributes the shut-downs to the "the overwhelming success of the recent Free Character Transfer Service." What this means is that players from less populated servers moved to more populous ones and turned their former homes into ghost towns. The players still on the condemned servers will be able to transfer their characters for no charge. However, you'll need to do it before October 15th or your characters will be gone for good.

"We have lots of new content and updates planned for Galaxies and remain committed to making the game an enjoyable and engrossing experience. The server closure is an effort to improve the gameplay experience for all of our players," said LucasArts in their announcement.
