Stardock Wants Star Control, Master of Orion Sequels Sins of a Solar Empire publisher Stardock is the old-fashioned type. They don't like DRM and they really enjoy classic strategy games like Star Control and Master of Orion. In fact, they'd love to get a shot at reviving either franchise.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Stardock CEO Brad Wardell said he'd be interested in making a fourth installment of Star Control, a space combat RPG, or Masters of Orion, an galactic empire-building game. "I actually pitched Atari on a whole idea for a true successor to Star Control," said Wardell.

That's right, "true successor." If Stardock gets a chance to continue the franchises, he wants the new games to be faithful to Star Control II or Masters of Orion 2. He had harsh words for Star Control 3 and Masters of Orion 3, which strayed from the series' roots (and sucked): "If you're making a game that ends with '3,' or Something: The Sequel, it should be similar to the original game. Don't go off and say, 'I have my own artistic vision.' Okay, good -- so call it something else. Don't ride the coattails of the people who came before you to launch your own artistic vision."

Here's hoping they get ahold of either series. Most younger gamers have probably never heard of either series so it's less likely some company is going to be able to make an easy buck by making a half-assed Star Control first-person shooter or some crap. So why not give the reins over to Stardock? By the same token, though, Stardock could easily make a game with the same flavor as either series without the brand name. Guess there's a certain thrill in knowing you're making the next chapter in a lauded series that you wouldn't get by creating a knock-off, though.
