I’m slightly sad by the announcement that Super Mario Bros 3, possibly the greatest platformer I’ve ever played, is coming the the Virtual Console. Why so sad? I’m not sure how interested I am, as I’ve been playing the game on my Gameboy SP and DS for years now. Who the hell am I kidding? This is the seminal platforming title in all of gaming, and now we get to play it once more on large television screens. Spending hours warping from world to world, donning our spiffy Tanooki costume, and taking on all the Koopa Kids. The joys of Mario never end.
No one should be surprised by this news, as the VC has been used as a marketing tool in the past. Super Metroid came out concurrently with Prime 3’s release in August. We all battled it out on message boards as to whether the game would come out this week, but I think everyone knew deep down it would.
Rumblings around the web is that Mario Galaxy is spectacular, and I hope so because my Wii is getting dusty. Until I get the chance to play Mario's new adventure I’ll be defeating Koopa Kids while wearing the Frog Suit so I can watch Mario hop off screen. I don’t know why that’s so funny, it just is. Super Mario Bros 3 is available for 500 Wii Points.
Also out this week for VC is Alien Soldier (900 Wii Points) and Power Golf (600 Wii Points). I’m sure someone is excited about these titles, and I’m happy for that person. I’ll just be in the corner playing some SM3, don’t mind me.
