Who honestly didn't see this coming? The once exclusive Star Wars characters playable in Soul Calibur IV, Yoda for the Xbox 360 version and Darth Vader for the Playstation 3 version, will be finally both be available for both versions. Now the Playstation owners will finally realize how much better Yoda is.

There's a catch, of course. Each character will cost five dollars to unlock through your respective system's online marketplace. I'm willing to bet that very same five dollars that these characters are already on the disc, instead of additional characters to download, and you are simply purchasing the "key" to unlock it. The download will be available on October 23rd. Now, I'm a huge proponent of downloadable content. The concept of being able to purchase additional content for your games is a really good idea; it allows people who enjoy the game to keep getting new content for a small fee, whereas people who don't care for it don't have to. The best implementation of this would be something like the Call of Duty 4 map pack, or the Shivering Isles expansion pack for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. These items were made post-release by the development team as thanks to their fans for staying interested. These Vader/Yoda downloads, however, are essentially making you pay to unlock content that you've already paid for. It's a cheap way to squeeze a few more bucks out of the consumer. That being said, I know plenty of people who agree with me, but they're still going to buy the characters. And hey, I'm a sucker, so I probably will too. I've been curious how Vader plays. |
