The Writers Strike: Game On, Suckers!

I’m sure most people have been made aware that the heavy hitting writers of Hollywood have gone on strike. Sadly we’re going to have to do without a remake of Ishtar for at least another month. Perhaps the writers’ strike won’t be the end of the world, but according to a recent Variety article it might spell doom to some of our favorite shows like Cavemen, or K-Ville… Oh the humanity! We might lose two shows that no one watches anyway!(I apologize for that snipe to all five fans of Cavemen)

The strike started on Monday and threatens to interrupt our daily viewing habits. Whether it is new movies getting made (which isn’t happening between sequels and remakes) or finding out what happens to Ned in Pushing Daisies we might be in for a long wait. More immediately it means that The Daily Show, SNL,The Colbert Report and other TV shows based in current events will be going into reruns immediately.

The strike is over issues in TV and movie DVD sales, so why is this being written in a games article? The question is as follows: What will the writers’ strike mean to gamers? Well, according to Wayne Freedman at TVWatch it means that game sales will drop due to a lack of exposure because people won’t be watching Jay Leno.

I hate to break it to Mr. Freedman, but we’re already not watching Leno. We’re also not watching the next sequel to The Pink Panther, which is a sequel to a remake. That’s why video game sales are up. The rest of the entertainment industry hasn’t been entertaining since they remade The Fog and allowed American Idol to breed. In fact, recent comments on Halo 3 sales by Bob Frederickson sums up the general mood of gamers in regards to the rest of the entertainment industry.

What does the writers’ strike mean to the game industry? Apparently, it doesn’t mean a whole lot. What does it mean to the average gamer? You’ll be watching reruns of Heroes in a month or so and will have to settle for outdated political humor from Jon Stewart. So in the mean time, pick up those controllers and invite your friends over because it’s just going to be reruns.
