Not that Valve has anything to worry about, but a new digital distribution service is in town and it's called Archive Games. The new service is set to offer a wide range of independent games. The service owner, Archive Entertainment, already has a nice line-up of developers willing to offer their games on the new service.
Technically, Archive Games is more like a digital distribution rival for the likes of Playfirst or Reflexive, considering that they cater toward indie and casual games. Nevertheless, more competition for digital distribution only means more games and more choices for gamers.
Archive Entertainment owner Robby Zinchak said in the press release, “We think Archive Games will be a useful asset to small independent developers, especially as it's very easy for developers to distribute their games on the service. We want to work together with small teams to help them gain more players for their great games.”
Usually when a distribution service kick-starts into the gaming industry it has little or nothing to offer. However, at present, gamers can download the following games for free on Archive Games.
• Nethack: Explore a procedurally generated dungeon with a unique gameplay experience each time you play.
• OpenLieroX: An extremely addictive realtime 2D shoot-em-up.
• Glest: A 3D real-time strategy game, where you control the armies of two different factions: Tech and Magic.
• SimWorld: A first person shooter where players can build their own fortresses.
• Backyard Bones: A 2D puzzle game where you guide Ruby in underground explorations.
Archive Games is currently available for Windows and Linux platforms. For information about the new digital distribution service or the products offered on it, you can drop by the Official Archive Games Website. For more news and info on all things gaming, be sure to stay tuned in with Blend Games.
