THQ announced today that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is currently in development for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The action RPG is being developed by Relic Entertainment, the studio behind the Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War real-time strategy series.

Space Marine will have a single-player campaign as well as "massive online battles." The first preview by IGN reveals that you'll acquire new equipment and improve your statistics over the course of the game. No release date has been revealed but the game will be on display at this year's E3.

The first trailer of the game is below. Video footage of a Warhammer 40K shooter was leaked last fall but THQ told Shacknews that it was produced by a studio other than Relic and does not reflect the current state of Space Marine.
