Warren Spector: Games Should Be Cheaper

While gaming is now a multi-billion dollar industry, Deus Ex designer Warren Spector thinks there's a lot of room for growth. The key to that growth, he says, is lowering the price of video games.

"The key is removing barriers to the creation of content and removing barriers to the consumption of content. Allowing people access to lots of it, at the lowest possible price where you can make a profit," said Spector in a chat with GI.biz at GDC last week.

"I've always had this anecdotal belief that there's this magic price point for entertainment. And it's not a per dollar charge. No one thinks about how many hours they're going to get out of their entertainment dollars. If I've got a 20 dollar bill in my pocket I can go buy a book, go to a movie, but I can't buy a game. I can buy a CD, I can do so much even now, but you cannot buy a game."

See, but you can buy a game for $20. Between digital services like Steam and Good Old Games and the bargain bins at retail stores, it's pretty easy to game on the cheap. Hell, Steam was selling four games for $10 this past weekend. Don't forget PSN, Virtual Console, and Xbox Live Arcade either. You can always just rent new games too if you're not in the mood to shell out $60.

Spector's currently head of Junction Point Studios, a division of Disney Interactive. Their first game is still unannounced but based on these statements, you suspect it's going to be something very affordable. Perhaps the game will be broken up into several $10 episodes, sort of like TellTale Games' Sam & Max.
