Weekly Recap: Tomb Raider Exclusivity Fiasco And 4 Other Major News Stories

GamesCom 2014 turned out to be a massive surprise given that there were a ton of huge news items that came rolling out of the event, plenty of videos, new games and exclusive deals that caused plenty of chatter, controversy and speculation, as well as a clear indication of how the eighth generation home console race is unfolding.

The one thing that rocked the gaming nation was finding out that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be an Xbox One exclusive. After all the Jimmie rustling took place it was later revealed that Microsoft had only acquired timed exclusivity for the game. Still, the whole ordeal left a sour taste in the mouths of gamers. We also found out that Sony has moved more than 10 million PS4 units into the homes of customers, while both Nintendo and Microsoft were still coy in sharing the figures for their home consoles for the month of July in this month's NPD results. Diablo Will Get Patched On Consoles

There were huge worries that Blizzard wouldn't be patching the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Diablo III like the PC counterpart, but the company put those rumors to rest. Activision lets slip and then retracts the system requirements for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Rise of Tomb Raider Becomes Xbox One Exclusive

In a shocking twist of events, it was revealed during Microsoft's GamesCom conference for the Xbox One that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics' upcoming sequel to the 2013 release of Tomb Raider will be an Xbox One exclusive. Sierra has made a return to form under the Activision banner, focusing on old classics and edgy indie titles. DayZ is now officially coming to the PS4, but no release date has been set. A brand new exclusive has been announced for the PS4 by Ninja Theory called Hellblade. Sega wants out of the Aliens: Colonial Marines lawsuit by offering a settlement. There's a ton of new games coming out for the PS4 and Ryan offered up a trailer round-up for all the games. Rise of Tomb Raider Is Only A Timed Exclusive

After everyone had a cow about the exclusivity deal between Microsoft and Square Enix regarding Tomb Raider, it turns out that the game is only going to be a timed exclusive; crisis averted. Starbreeze and Skybound have teamed up for a new cooperative shooter called Overkill's The Walking Dead. It's a long ways from release, though. Gaming Blend's Ryan Winslett rolls out a review for the odd Otaku game, Akiba's Trip. BioWare announced a new multiplayer RPG called Shadow Realms. And Norman Reedus will star in the new Silent Hills from Guillermo Del Toro and Hideo Kojima.

Xbox One Sales Data Still MIA

The latest bit of NPD data still hasn't revealed exactly where Microsoft stands with the Xbox One and its sales, they're the only ones who have yet to update where the console sits in total sales. Sony still managed to come out on top as the top selling console of July. The reviews have piled in for Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition for the Xbox One and PS4. Microsoft keeps the exclusivity deal rolling in hot and heavy, this time with some pre-order goodies for The Witcher 3. Bungie lets loose a brand new trailer for Destiny featuring a look at Mars. Ether One is making its way to the PlayStation 4 after landing on Steam for PC. We finally get to see some of the single-player gameplay of Battlefield Hardline, while Minecraft on the PS4 has been officially completed and Nintendo rolls out a ton of new deals and content for the weekly deals.
