Capcom announced Monday morning that they're bringing survival horror game Dead Rising to the Wii. Dead Rising depicts an ordinary man fighting his way through a zombie-infested mall - an apt metaphor for what you'll have to do to purchase Rising this holiday season.
The Wii port, called Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop, will use the Resident Evil 4 engine and feature the same over-the-shoulder camera system. Apparently this new camera system doesn't sit well with the Photo Mode from the original Xbox 360 version so no picture-taking for you in this port. Taking pictures gave the player experience points to spend on augmenting their character's combat skills in the 360 version so I'm curious if they'll add another mechanism for earning these points in the Wii version or if they'll remove the skill development system altogether.
Using the Wiimote, you'll be able to shoot guns, swing melee weapons and shove zombies trying to eat your brains - which sounds fun but I foresee a news story sometime after the game's release about how Dead Rising taught a local child how to swing a baseball bat at the mailman. I hope to be proven wrong on that one.
Capcom will also be making a few changes to make the game a little more user-friendly than the 360 version. The side quests to rescue other survivors in the mall will no longer have time limits; instead, you'll be given a handful smaller missions to do before you tackle major plot mission. In addition, they'll be reworking the much-maligned save system (which let you only have one save file per user account) but there's no exact details on that yet.
There's also going to be less zombies swarming you but that's not a game difficulty concern so much as a technical one - the Wii isn't as powerful as the Xbox 360 and can't handle having as many zombies on-screen on that same time. No clue how dramatic of a change it'll be; I'm content to wait for a nerdier soul to compare screenshots between the two versions and calculate the difference to the nearest zombie-per-square-foot. Capcom's changes - which also include new weapons and enemies - should balance out whatever the deficit is.
