Wii Need A Good Game: Why Licensed Games Are Keeping The Wii In The Kiddy Pool

Wii Need A Good Game: Why Licensed Games Are Keeping The Wii In The Kiddy Pool
On a trip to my nearest video game distributor (I won’t name names, but people often stop to get games there) I found that my eye was caught on the selection of games for the Nintendo Wii. For a moment, I thought that Disney might have bought out Nintendo: the percentage of licensed games was overwhelming compared to the actual number of games available. All I saw, other than a scant few copies of Zelda and Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition were copies of games like Cars, Meet the Robinsons, and Surfs Up (Ok, that’s not Disney, but you get my point). If the Wii is selling like hotcakes and aiming to get casual and serious gamers interested, then why are there so few serious games to go with the casual ones?

To be fair, it is a very new system and publishers need time to get used to the hardware before they can make proper software. But the GameCube did poorly as a system because of the lack of compelling games and the plethora of games aimed only at children. It is clear that Nintendo is trying to reach kids and perhaps people that did not play games before (hence the introduction of the Wii Fit at this years E3), but it is not trying to pull in the people who actually care about gaming as a hobby and sometimes as a way of life: the serious gamers.

The message that Nintendo is sending is that they want everyone to game, but if that means catering only to those who do not play regularly then the real gamers who can make or break the success of a system will go elsewhere for their adult-aimed games. Nintendo may be successful financially, but once the novelty of the motion-sensing controllers wears off a lot of real gamers feel let down by the vapid games. We crave depth to our games which includes story and game play and then graphics, and since the Wii is not the graphics powerhouse that the other two systems are, we can only hope for the first two.

Thank God for the virtual console or else the system wouldn’t have much of a leg to stand on right now. Super Mario Galaxy is something we can all look forward to, but for now I’ll play some Donkey Kong Country and then maybe do something else for a while.

  • they should buy some games from xbox 360 and all of the other good consoles because most of the games suck
  • As a person growing up playing alot of game systems I must say that the wii is fun. But does the wii not atleast have the capability of a ps2. I mean come on. I got my wii after two of my xbox 360 systems fried. Can nintendo not cature to kids and adults? The graphics and proscessor are supposed to be better than the ps2 but we are still seeing crap graphics on all the games.they are leaving out stuff on games that are multi-platform. Im not expecting them to look as good as the 360 or ps3 but they could look better.my wife and child love the wii but im thinking about getting another system because i dont want to play games like big mamas cook off or trauma center.i want to play halo 3 or rainbow 6 . wii needs to step up and deliver adult games and realize the kids are not the only ones who play games or in the end they will lose to sony and microsoft when the motion controlled craze is over.
  • I'm so sick of this "Hardcore gamers are about fun not graphics therefore the Wii IS for hardcore gamers" crap. I don't give a flying flip about graphics and I like fun and the Wii is definately not for me. Why? They have no games. Just like the poster somewhere above me, the novelty has worn off. It was awesome in the beginning but now I haven't touched the thing in 3 months. Why? Because when I go to the store all I see is Magic Butterflies on Rainbow Island. I'm sick of it and if it weren't for the Nintendo Trinity coming out (Metroid, mario and ssbb) I'd probably consider getting another system.

So yes, the system doesn't have any games. But thank god some backup is on its way.
  • Nintendo's strategy with the Wii has always been about marketing it as the must-have gaming system for the uninitiated. The hardcore market is not on their radar, as they believe there is more money to be made in the 90% of consumers who are not within the hardcore niche. So far, judging from their numbers, it looks like they're right.

Chances are, by now the novelty of motion sensing controllers HAS worn off for the hardcore Wii owners, but that isn't making Wii sports or WarioWare any less fun to play at parties comprised of both hardcore and casual gamers at social gatherings. And that's one thing you can't say about Gears of War.

The system is lacking in hardcore games, but the business model seems to be working, regardless. When there's money involved, the notion of the "real" or "hardcore" gamer becomes just another statistic.
  • You are preaching to the choir Marissa. Sad truth is that many other Wii owners dont even know about the virtual console and rarely look beyond the party games, so that is where the real market is at the moment. Things will likely continue this way until demand for the shallower game starts to dip, and I cant see that happening anytime soon. Good games are coming, but will these casual gamers buy them? Any Mario game will sell well for sure, but as for games like Metroid 3 and No More Heroes, not so sure. Shame because they look great.
  • I don't get the wii hate. The fact that you still can't find one at the store, not to mention the actual sales figures, speaks for itself. When will you people get it? It's been 9 months, the "novelty" of the controllers is not going to wear off. That the wii is doing so well without a large number of quality games is an indicator of how amazing it must be. Afterall, the wii will only get better from here. Imagine what the numbers will be like when the AAA titles are more common.

As for serious gamers, your definition is mixed up. Serious gamers are people who want fun first. Everything else is a nice bonus. Thus, the wii caters to them perfectly. Moreover, it's a question of value. Despite graphics or the number of titles, you still get much more fun per dollar out of a wii than any of the competition. That's why it's doing so well and that's why it'll continue to dominate.
  • I think it's a bit of a down side that Wii isn't getting the new UFC game or RE5. I so far do own FarCry Vengeance, MK Armageddon, & RE4. I'll be getting Escape From Bug Island & REUC when I can get them.

Nintendo should be focusing on Project HAMMER & Disaster, but will most likley half-@$$ the games or the advertising for them.
