It must be a frightening experience to be a big, dominating lion, roaming through the jungle and knowing that you rule all, only to have a vole come up and steal your pride by beating the living snot out of you. Well, that very same scenario is bound to happen, given the current sales propulsion of the Wii and the slow gains of the Xbox 360.
Keeping up with the latest sales trends of the three new consoles has rendered the same results every month since the [PS3 and Wii’s] debut in November: The Wii sales lead the trio, then the Xbox 360 and then the PS3. This is excluding the likes of the handhelds and the PS2. But strictly focusing on the media-tagged “next-gen consoles”, you might notice that while the Xbox 360's year lead over its competitors show a great deal of relevance when compared to the PS3, you’ll notice that it looks far less compelling when measured up to the likes of the Wii.
February, March and April have shown uncompromising sales figures for the Wii. Even though the Xbox 360 has close to 9.8 million units as an installed base, the Wii’s 7.6 million installed consumer base is simply remarkable. It’s easily the fastest selling home entertainment console within the first six months of launch. Heck, it took the original PlayStation just over a year to achieve the numbers that the Wii is currently holding.
But if the Wii is closing in on the 360 within its first six months, what happens when the holiday season rolls around? That’s not to mention that casual gaming parents will see the Mario and Sonic collaboration game, the Cosmic Family and other simpleton titles and figure them to be a perfect shut-my-child-up-for-ten-minutes gift. Don’t believe me? Nintendo World Report shows NPD figures of Super Paper Mario holding the top charts for game sales in April for the home consoles. Can you imagine what will happen when Master Mario takes the stage once Mario Galaxy hits store shelves? Impulsive casual gamers will buy it because the market will persuade their whiny little kids to pester their parents into paying for the not-so-pricey game.
But I’m not going to take away all of Nintendo’s meat from their bones by applying their success wholly to the casual market. Hardcore gamers are still the prime beef that will excel sales for titles like Disaster: Day of Crisis, No More Heroes, Nights, and Resident Evil 4. But despite Microsoft’s hand feeding the majority of the hardcore gaming market with back-to-back shoot-e’m-ups and action titles for the 360, this generation of gaming might just go to the casual market. *shudders* The thought of that can send a poor hardcore gamer to an early grave.
Still, Microsoft’s lack of casual gaming – or rather, the accessibility of casual games on the Xbox 360 – is what makes it hard to sell the console to anyone who isn’t a hardcore gamer. Couple this fact with an age-old control scheme, a separate (yet debatably pricey) HD-DVD add-on, and three different retail consoles to choose from (getting as high as $479.99) and the Xbox 360 looks like a myriad of techy gadgetry for the average non-gamer. What M$ needs to do to change this perception...or rather, what they can do to alter how the Xbox 360 is marketed toward casual gamers is another topic for another article (you almost thought I was going to give that away, didn’t you?)
Nevertheless, the Wii is selling strong and selling fast and Nintendo’s breakthrough casual machine is homing in to take the lead whether M$ likes it or not...the Wii’s target is 2 million units away and closing.
Wii Catching Up With Xbox 360
Do you think it matters if the Wii passes up the Xbox 360 with its installed base?

I'm so sick of people acting like the Wii is competing against the PS3 and the 360. The Wii is in competition with the PS2. There are only 2 next gen systems. Why don't you report on the PS2 outselling the PS3? Simply because they're really not competing. You guys have to stop this nonsense.
tha wii is so fukking gay , man this world ios full of losers
the 360 is tha betta console wat teh wii is doi has all ready been done b4 more or less
look at light gun games , u point n u shoot tha same think except alil more through but alil u yeah n that its with all games its notghink special just a lil gimmic 2 stuged every cunnnt
they dont desevr 2 b in frony o yeah n if it wozent 4 japan they wountd be now where near teh 360 sluttt
I don't think it really matters who sells more consoles, as long as the 360 user base continues to grow and a healthy game attach rate is maintained.
I'm sure Wii will overtake MS but their current momentum will slow at some point and the gap will narrow.
There's no 1 game that sells the Wii, it's the control system and price, games like GTA4 and Halo3 sell consoles and other big titles like Forza2 should also spike sales.
I think when the momentum slows, because of the "casual gamer" nature of the Wii it will not see the same sales spike when a big title is released.
Don't get me wrong i like the Wii, it will get some great games and sales will probably fly past the 360 by next year, but i see the 360 gaining back some ground later in the cycle, driven on by strong software.
I don't think MS has to sell as many hardware units as the Wii to sell the same amount of games, hardcore gamers buy more games and even with less 360's sold both MS and Nintendo could come out winners.
The wii is performing great at the moment.I can't see it slowing down in sales
for now the wii is a good console with a lot of great games coming at the end of this year.I think it will pass the x-box this time next year in hardware sales
i hope the wii wins this console war.
The only solution to gamers who like a little bit of everything is to just get all the damn systems. get them used, get them somehow that is the only way to be pleased. Halo 3, is going to be crazy - literally. GTA4, looks like kids won't have to go out and shoot people in real life anymore. The Wii offers a different king of gameplay, but the games offered get bad reviews since its still "in the process", and developers aren't used to how to implement or change the game around for the motion censor control scheme. I give the Wii another year to come out with games that have been in development for a year or more to come out strong using the motion sensor control scheme. Halo 3 should rocket above any game sales because of its hype and awesome gameplay and storyline. The Wii's graphics are sorry to say the least - i feel like i am playing ps2, which makes it even sadder when i see ps3 and xbox 360 games. Nonetheless it encourages kids and adults to get a workout instead of sitting all day exercising their hands, this time you have to stand up - and who wants to stand up after a long day of work. I wish i had a ps3 and 360. btw Shavo you need to work on your english - it's almost as sad as the Wii's graphics.
The only time I have had to stand to play wii is with wii bowling, but it's not like you sit down when you bowl for real. The PS2 look is not the systems fault as screenshots of newer games prove. Hopefully it won't take long for all wiii games to look like xbox1+.
I mainly use gameznflix so I haven't gotten to play many of the games I really wanted to play. Lightguns in the past or not actually aiming to shoot AND having it work good is the shizzle. Same goes for using motions to beat peole down. Not to mention Manhunt 2 is only scheduled to release for wii and ps2 (no point in ps2 version, worse graphics, sequences, etc). That will make wii the bloodiest system of the newest 3.
My point is that companies are putting more and more into Wii, and I see it being entirely possible for them to have a respectable stake of hardcore gamers. That's not to mention virtual console, with the genesis, nes, snes, tg-16, and (coming soon) neo-geo. VC alone justifies a hard core gamer purchase, and it's definitly putting up some hefty sales. The price makes me wonder about 360 winning hardcore too. If you afforded a 360, you can afford to go to wii60 mode and will find lots of gaming goodness on wii.
I too am sick of the wii vs next gen comparisons, this is crazy, how can professional game journalists continue to make this comparison, get it through your thick skulls, the wii is not a next gen console, it is a toy for average people, not gamers. This is really making me bitter towards the wii and Nintendo and it is really not their fault! But that toy out selling real consoles is not news so stop with the headlines.
i believe its like this,Wii will sell more because of freshness ,price, first party, super Mario Galaxy and ease to use and some third party's like RE 4 ,FFCC,GH3.xbox is more expensive but strong third party support foe hardcore.ps3 no offense to the fans but its just dead,u gotta see it as it is.its all good you know they say its good its all good.they all have their advantages and all have their disadvantages.play what ever console u want if u have money to buy all three go ahead buy all three. remember we DON'T play systems we play GAMES!!!!!!!! -for that super mario galaxy will be a legendary GAME!- --remember this if U read it---
i have nothing to back this info up ,but it what i believe --remember:PLAYING IS BELIEVING .. peace out.
First of all Shavo go take a basic english class. Second BDev, Shavo, and Hemo take a more objective/intelligent approach to your comments. People will hear you out better, whether they agree or disagree.
Nintendo never said they were in competition with with 360 or PS3. Not to mention PS2. It is ridiculous to even bring up. The waves of games that are coming out are mostly ports. This is so because devs are still figuring out the full capabilities of Wii (same goes for 360 and PS3). So before a dev co. goes out and invests in a new game to create, they're gonna make sure that their people know how to utilize the hardware.
Topic 2: The Wii is far from a toy people. Anyone who as played with, purchased, and or taken the time to properly/rationaly, explore/review the Wii knows this. I find the "toy" label highly inaccurate. The Wii brings arcade style of play into the common house hold. The price point is a reflection of smart budjeting, marketing, and cost efficient developing. Just because it doesnt have PC type horse power combined with traditional console gaming, doesnt make it a toy. Gamecube never recieved (as far as I know) this label and the Wii is far superior than GC.
Topic 3: In my opinion the Wii will surpass 360. Simply cause they have gained alot of ground due good marketing, word of mouth advertising, and living up to the their claims. Not to mention core and causal gamers can look forward to releases such as Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Disater: Day of Crisis, Sadness, R.E. Chronicles, Metroid Prime 3, and many other AAA titles. Yes at some point the console will slow down, unless devs create unique software to attract the crowd Nintendo is aiming for. This is a very easy conclusion to picture given the great success of the Nintendo DS. Will it happen? Only time will tell. I remain optomistic.
A lot of people that are buying the wii are just sticing with the sports games that came with the system and a lot of retierment homes are buying them for the old people to keep them active cuz the system is so easy to use so even though they sell a lot doesn't mean anything. the xbox 360 and the pos 3 are in a diferint mario
It looks like alot of pepole are geting touchy about the wii wining well if that bothers you you've seen nothing yet wait for the good games to come out
I bought a Wii INSTEAD of a 360 -- I thought long and hard about it, and while I still have moments during the current drought of games that I wish I could be playing GoW, Forza, etc. I'm still more than happy with my purchase. But my point is, I bought a wii instead of a 360, so have many of my friends.. Id do it again, and Thus...... They are in direct competition. The Wii is not irrelevant to the next gen console wars. If it wasn't around, more ps3s and more 360s would sell. Count it, and the foul.
I bought a 360...and was thinking about buying a Wii. I thought long and hard and decided to buy ANOTHER 360.
My point is...I've had my second 360 for about 6 months now. Some of my friends opted for the Wii as their second console...but they now report that it's simply sitting on the shelf collecting dust. (You'll also see numerous reports over the internet with people saying the same thing)
I played with the Wii...it can definitely be fun for a few minutes...or even hours. But, it loses it's appeal very quickly.
Another thing: has anybody else noticed that the games that come out for the Wii are some of the LOWEST rated games? It's true...especially on games that come out for all 3 consoles: 360, PS3, Wii...The Wii games just aren't good. (just browse www.gamespot.com)
Now I have 2 360s, and they are both constantly in use. Practically every game is xbox live multiplayer enable - and the fun never stops.
Zelda is probably the only game I wouldn't mind having...not that I would have time to play it with all the AWESOME games out for the 360!
of coarse wii is next gen!! its technology is just in a new way to play games and not grafix. the games are all the same for ps3 and 360, but there is acualy something different about the wii. this is wyy it will take over the top spot early next year. if there was no halo 3 it would take the spot much earlyer
For what it is worth, I bought a wii as the 'nex-gen' console (don't throw a hissy fit, I use the term because I was deciding between it, the 360 and the ps3). Anyway, I guess if I had the sort of money to throw down and buy another console it'd be a 360 due to halo 3. Now that I have said that, here's a thought. All three consoles can exist in harmony. "hardcore gamers" can scream and shout until their blue in the face about how the wii sucks, is not a nex gen, etc., but in the end the wii is competing against the other two. Personally, I think attacking the other consoles is just a way for people to reassure themselves that they made the 'right' decision. Kudos to you who have the money to buy multiple consoles (or parents who are willing to buy you them). I wish I could be so lucky. Perhaps when I have a career, and no loans to pay...
