Oh, so you’re back for more console-on-console pwnage, eh? Well in the first round of the fight the Xbox 360 took things up swiftly with its year-head start. However, after the launch of the Wii and PS3, things have sizzled up between the three big gaming giants. Namely, Nintendo’s giant killer, the Wii, is erecting through the sales charts like Eddie Murphy taking a stroll through the effeminate side of West Hollywood.
The amazing thing about the Wii is that its general premise actually kind of sucks. Really, it doesn’t look all that cool – when compared to the PS3 anyway. And the entire aesthetic shtick is lacking in more ways than I need to mention. The Wii-mote is innovative, yes, but it’s nothing like what the Powerglove was, almost twenty years ago. Still, the masters of casual gameplay (i.e., Nintendo) have managed to topple the big boys (i.e., Sony & MS) with amazing sales around the world, and especially on the scalper island that used to be Ebay.
And according to PunchJump, it looks like the Wii is garnishing some respective figures on Ebay. Not only that, even with the PS3's mildly successful launch in the PAL territories – though, namely Australia – the Big ‘N’s little Wii is still kicking butt in the overall units shipped and installed. Matters don’t help Sony any better with the declining PS3 prices on Ebay, and the incessant high-end costs of production. Nintendo is scoring big points in the video game arena, and I don’t think Microsoft or Sony like the way the high scores are racking up for the Big 'N'.
And even though Chris Satchell, in his interview with CVG, dogged the Wii and PS3's motion-sensing capabilities, Mr. Satchell’s comments go unmerited when compared to the Wii’s sales. Heck, Nintendo is eating up financial success like George Lucas at a pork sampling convention...or rather, Mark Hamill at an all-you–can-smoke cigarette buffet. Still, you get my drift.
Even with the Xbox 360 Elite around the corner, I can’t imagine that helping M$’s case. The main problem is that it’s a barely cheaper (and less qualified) version of the PlayStation 3. Talk about wallet-raping to the extreme. The only way the Elite will work is if it’ll eventually take the price point of the Pro system, stays black, and the HDD cost drops significantly. But we’re already being told that the black color scheme isn’t going to stay. Still, with Nintendo catching up really fast in total units shipped and sold of the Wii (e.g., Wii = 6 million, Xbox 360 = 9 million), it’s making the holiday season of 2007 look like a potential bad break-up for the Wii60.
Once Nintendo evens the installed-base score with Microsoft , it’ll nearly become eye-busting to see how Gates and Co., retaliates. But for those of you thinking that the Xbox’s Halo 3 will be the surefire ace-up-the-sleeve for M$ come this holiday season...well, all I can say for now is that such a postulate is another topic for another article.
