Wii Super-Surges Ahead While PS3 Drops Below Estimates

published: 2007-05-18 06:48:17
Geesh, you guys think we’re hard on the PlayStation 3, do ya? Well, we’re no where near as tough on the PlayStation 3 when compared to the absolutely brutal beating the PlayStation 3 has incurred from...consumers. The Wii, alternatively, has blasted ahead way beyond the estimates that analysts had predicted for April.

As of course, the DS dominated the month of April with 471,000 units shifted. Next to the unbeatable Nintendo DS, was the soon-to-be king of the next-generation, the Wii. This little beast – despite all the press about not being able to find them on store shelves – moved an astounding 371,000 units. That’s up 71k from what Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter, predicted for April.

On to saddening news...unless there’s some saving grace coming in May, you might want to mark it as the month the PS3 will officially become the Gamecube of this generation’s console race. The PS3 has shifted, according to Morgan Wedbush, a disappointingly low 82,000 units for April. Oh-My-Goodness! Sony must be peeing in their pants right about now, if not then they must be grinding their teeth the way Paris Hilton grinds a stripper pole. I don’t think I even need to say how bad 82,000 looks in the midst of consoles that are at least staying moderately high in the six-digit arena. Heck, even the PS2 didn’t drop that low and the only games it’s getting are rejects and hand-me-downs.

Speaking of the PS2, its numbers took a drop in hardware sales, as opposed to March. The PS2 moved a moderately admirable 194,000 units, still beating out Microsoft’s muscle-bound Xbox 360, which did a meagerly acceptable shift of 174,000 SKUs. But get this, the PSP actually beat out the Xbox 360, shifting a respectable 183,000 units, thanks in good part to the recent price drop. It may no longer be a threat to the Nintendo DS (just like the Xbox 360 is no longer a threat to the Wii) but the PSP sure is giving the monster 3-6-0 a run for its money.

Many gamers may still hide behind the illusive curtain called denial when talk of the PS3's success is brought up. But let’s face it, the PS2 certainly wasn’t getting its butt kicked this badly against the Dreamcast. 2008 may be the year the PS3 shines a noticeable light on the gaming industry, but 2007 is going to be the year the PS3 went down in history as getting its butt handed to it on a platinum platter by the mini-game machine, known as the Wii.
