WiiWare Getting Mega Man 9

There's finally some concrete info on the new, "classic" Mega Man game. As it turns out, the upcoming issue of Nintendo Power has a full preview of Mega Man 9, coming soon to WiiWare. Lo and behold, the preview got leaked to the Interwebz early.

The Mega Man Network got its hands on a few scans of the Nintendo Power article. The screenshots look exactly like the old NES Mega Man games - exactly like them. Looks like they're really gunning for the nostalgia dollar. Maybe they thought, "It's not like anyone's gonna bowled over if the game had 16-bit graphics, so why not 8-bit?"

The scans from the article are small and kind of blurry but the folks at Kombo.com managed to transcribe some of the text, which sheds more light on the gameplay. To round out the retro experience, players will control Mega Man by holding the Wii remote sideways like it's an old school NES controller. They'll move with the control pad, jump with one button, shoot with the other. The game will follow the same basic formula as predecessors: Mega Man makes his way through eight different levels and fights Robot Masters (bosses) at the end of each. Each Robot Master has a special ability that Mega Man then acquires after defeating him. No word on release date or whether it will come to Playstation Network for Xbox Live Arcade, but I assume a Nintendo Power article typically wouldn't mention other consoles.

The sort of person who would care about a new retro Mega Man game is the sort who would also care about the names of the new Robot Masters (for the game, so the NP article smartly lists them: Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, Tornado Man, and Splash Woman. That's right, some lady robot finally broke the glass ceiling and became the first female Robot Master. I guess there is a drawback to 8-bit graphics, after all: pixel boobies.
