Earlier this year, it seemed like Infinity Ward wanted to release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 without the Call of Duty prefix. Was this indicative of some larger desire to move onto something different?
"We take it game-by-game. We never worry about the future too much. Right now we wanted to make a sequel, so the entire team is hands on deck for making Modern Warfare 2," Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling told Develop in an interview. "Then once this is done, maybe we’ll see about doing something new. If we do want to do something else, then we will do it. We don’t feel tied to making Call of Duty games."
"We still make Call of Duty games because we’re having fun doing it. And when it stops being fun, we’ll move onto something else."
It wouldn't mean the end of Call of Duty if Infinity Ward did move onto different projects. Right now, IW tag-teams the franchise with another studio, Treyarch. Activision would probably go and find another company to replace IW in the two-studio rotation so that yearly sequels would still be possible.
