Wolfenstein: The Old Blood Is World War 2 Prequel To New Order

Wolfenstein: The New Order developer MachineGames will be releasing a prequel to their shooter soon. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is a standalone adventure that brings the series back to World War 2.

In The Old Blood, players once again step into the shoes of American agent BJ Blazkowicz. In the first part, entitled "Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves," he breaks into Castle Wolfenstein to find out the location of General Deathshead's compound. Part two, "The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs," pits him against a Nazi archeologist trying to dig up powerful artifacts in the city of Wulfburg. The eight-chapter expansion will lead into the main campaign for The New Order.

Because the game takes place in 1946 rather than the sixties, some of the more advanced technology is missing. There were no laser weapons or mechs in the trailer. Blazkowicz has to resort to killing a Nazi with a pipe at one point. However, there's still plenty of anachronisms like chainguns, Tesla weapons and Nazis clad in power armor.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood will be released digitally on May 5th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It'll be priced at $19.99 on all platforms. There's no mention of a PS3 or Xbox 360 release so last-gen consoles might miss out on this new adventure.

Bethesda PR men Pete Hines and Matt Grandstaff will be livestreaming Wolfenstein: The Old Blood at 10:30 am Eastern Time on Friday, March 6th and Saturday, March 7th. Hines said on Twitter that we'll find out more about the length of Old Blood during the stream:

While you don't need to own Wolfenstein: The New Order to buy The Old Blood, I'd strongly recommend picking up New Order. It was the best shooter of 2014 in my opinion thanks to its superb campaign. MachineGames did a great job of modernizing the one-man-army action of the previous Wolfenstein games while also giving players abundant opportunities to be stealthy as well. The story - a look at the 1960s if the Nazis had won World War 2 - is fascinating as well. The lack of multiplayer might annoy some but fortunately the game's frequently on sale so you can pick it up for far less than $60 as long as you're vigilant.
