World Of Warcraft, StarCraft II Forums Will Show Your Real NameAuthor: Pete Haas

In the future, you may want to be more polite on the World of Warcraft forums. Blizzard intends to change their official forums so every piece of drivel you write bears your real name.
"In the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID -- that is, their real-life first and last name -- with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it," announced Blizzard. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm." Eventually the "classic" forums (for, say, Diablo II and WarCraft III) will switch to this Real ID system as well. Blizzard's rationale is that this change will stamp out "flame wars, trolling, and other unpleasantness." They also feel that it will result in more constructive discussions. It should make stalking people a lot easier too, so there's that. There's no doubt that Blizzard's forums could use a little cleaning. There are legions of foul-mouthed, annoying ass-hats hanging out in them. Perhaps some of them will be less rude if their real name's attached to their comments. However, if you're a true ass-hat, would you care? Furthermore, the policy will probably lead to a lot of normal people abstaining from the forums because they don't want their real name floating around on the Internet. |
