Blizzard Entertainment revealed today that there are now over 12 million World of Warcraft subscribers in the world. So that's, what, six million Death Knights?

The game's incredible growth since 2004 has slowed in recent years. The subscriber base hit 11.5 million back in December 2008, around the time the Wrath of the Lich King expansion went live in North America and Europe. The recent mainland Chinese launch of Wrath is apparently what put it over the 12 million mark.

If you're wondering what constitutes a subscriber, here's the explanation from Blizzard: "World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules."

WoW should get another infusion of subscribers once its next expansion arrives. WoW: Cataclysm is set to be released worldwide on December 7th.
