Looks like the Madden curse struck a little early this year. That’s one way Packers fans can look at it seeing as how instead of being injured during the year, he’s retired from the league entirely. This will be the first time that EA has used a retired player to cover its exclusively licensed NFL simulation since 2001, the first year Madden began using NFL players to be on the covers.

According to EA, Brett Favre will be announced as the cover athlete for Madden NFL ’09 on his guest spot on the Late Show with David Letterman Friday night. EA Sports president Peter Moore will be in the live New York audience.

Madden NFL ’09 will launch on all major platforms on August 12th. This year’s version will mark the 20th anniversary of this storied game franchise.

When asked in an interview with ESPN whether or not Madden was trying to make a statement putting a retired player on the cover Favre responded, “It was more of a tribute, I think. I’m honored.”

Now if the Madden Curse reaches to Brett and he breaks his leg cooking bacon in his kitchen, John Madden might have to cover 2010 himself.
