Broken Age Release Date Set For Tuesday
Double Fine's next adventure game Broken Age will make its debut on PC this week, designer Tim Schafer announced over Twitter. Not everyone will get a chance to play, though.
He said in a later tweet, he clarified that the January 14th launch is only Kickstarter backers. The game's development was funded through a $3.3 million Kickstarter campaign. Double Fine says they'll announce details on the public release on that day as well.
The other catch is that Double Fine will only be releasing Part 1 of the game next week. Though they raised a substantial amount of money through Kickstarter, the studio discovered that they needed more funds to complete their vision of the game. This led them to split the game into two parts. Their plan is to release Part 1 through Steam Early Access and use the money from its sales to fund the second half's development.
Part 2 of Broken Age will be released as an free update through Early Access. In other words, if you bought Part 1, you won't have to pay extra for the second part. Double Fine said this summer that Part 2 would go live in April or May.
Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure that tells two similar stories. In the first tale, a boy living on a spaceship is kept isolated by a maternal computer. The second story stars a young girl whose village plans to sacrifice her to a monster. Players guide the boy and girl as they try to escape their fates,
Double Fine lined up an experienced cast of voice actors for the game. Jack Black (Eddie in Brutal Legend), Richard Horvitz (Raz from Psychonauts) and Nick Jameson (Max from Sam and Max) all play key roles. Jennifer Hale of Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic fame is the voice of the computer. Double Fine announced at Spike VGX that Elijah Wood will be Shay, the playable boy character.
