Bungie's Destiny Not Coming In 2013?
Destiny, the upcoming first-person shooter from Halo creators Bungie, might not be out this year. Publisher Activision issued a press release today that cautioned that they're not including the game in their financial estimates for the 2013 fiscal year.
"Activision reiterated that although Bungie's amazing new world was revealed today, Activision has not included the launch in its 2013 outlook and there should be no speculation or expectation of a different result," read the press release.
The company's fiscal year ends on December 31st, 2012. This means that the company doesn't believe that the Destiny will arrive this year. The retailer who listed an October launch date for the game is mistaken, then. That's not a huge surprise as retailers tend to just guesstimate release dates.
Destiny depicts humanity's decline centuries from now. Mankind has been reduced to a single city due to attacks by alien races. The only things preventing their extinction are the Traveler, a mysterious sphere hovering above the city, and the players, who portray the elite warriors of humanity. The game is said to be an always-on experience with both competitive and cooperative multiplayer elements.
Bungie is developing the game for Xbox 360, PS3 and "other future console platforms." They're presumably referring to the next Xbox and PlayStation. Those next-gen consoles are expected to launch this fall. I'd imagine Microsoft and Sony would love to have the game as a launch title for their new consoles but it seems that won't happen.
The game is Bungie's first since moving on from the Halo series. As such, there's a lot of hype surrounding the game. The intriguing gameplay details released so far, such as the MMO-like structure, make the game even more intriguing. It's too bad we may have to wait until 2014 to see whether it's worth the hype, though.
