The PS3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will have an additional option. Treyarch's David 'Vahn' Vonderhaar revealed on the game's forums that PS3 owners will be able to install the game's texture to their console's HDD.

"When we explained to PS3 folks that installing to the HDD wouldn't neccessarily give us any significant performance gains, they explained back that the issue is they play so much it puts constant stress on the Blu-ray drive and wears them out," said Vonderhaar.

Vonderhaar added that the texture installation requires a "non-trivial" amount of hard drive space. He didn't disclose how much will be needed, though. The exact size of the install is still subject to change as Treyarch works to finish the game.

It's rare but not unheard-of for a console game to let players install textures to their HDD. For example, Xbox 360 owners were able to do it for Battlefield 3. The BF3 texture pack weighed in at about 1.5 GB, so don't be surprised if the Black Ops 2 textures are around that size.

If you don't have hard drive space to spare, don't worry. You won't need to install the textures to play the game. Vonderhaar said that Black Ops 2 precaches the textures, just as the original game did.

Black Ops 2 will launch on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on November 13th.
