Capcom's senior vice president Christian Svensson has come forward to acknowledge questions and concerns about the PC port of Resident Evil 6. Unfortunately the game won't be releasing in tandem with its console brethren but the SVP has comforted some fans by saying that they want to avoid the disaster that was Ubisoft's piss-poor PC port of Resident Evil 4.
The Examiner picked up on Svensson's comment courtesy of the Ask Capcom thread on the official Unity forums. Originally when Sven was asked about the progress of the PC version, he stated that...
Guys, the PC version only just started development recently. To set expectations, it's going to take several months to complete if you want it to be a good job, well tested, etc. Our assumption is you want a good port, not a rushed port and that unfortunately takes time. Details on exact timings will come later in the year. There's some good news in that process I can't talk about yet but I know it will make some folks quite pleased. Cool
The above quote was from earlier in the month, back on September 6th. Given that gamers can sometimes be an impatient bunch, Svensson was back on the forums once again to answer more questions – and despite giving Capcom a hard time around here, I really do have to applaud and commend Sven for his due diligence and patience with handling these sometimes sensitive business matters.
Regarding the release window and current progress of the PC version of Resident Evil 6, Sven states...
It is a small, but appropriately sized team working on the RE6 PC project. It is a different group than originally planned, lest it would have taken even longer than it currently will but this team will do a better job than what was being considered originally.
Ouch, I'm betting Ubisoft is rubbing that insult off with some spray-on piracy repellent. For those of you who don't remember, Resident Evil 4 on PC was unworthy of even being pirated it was so bad. The controls were atrocious. The graphics were worse than a PS1 game (I kid you not, seriously it was gross) and there were a lot of inconsistencies in the design. The only way the game became playable was thanks to the modding community.
Resident Evil 5 on PC was a much better release and even had support for DX10 features. The game actually looked and played on par to its console counterparts and with a bit of tweaking and modding, the graphics could be made even better.
Hopefully Resident Evil 6 won't require any tweaking or modding to play correctly and I'm also hoping that the small but dedicated team can work out the kinks of the porting process so PC gamers can enjoy something closer to Resident Evil 5 as opposed to the benchmark atrocity that was Resident Evil 4 on PC.
Capcom's latest zombie shooter is coming to home consoles on October 2nd. The game recently received a demo, which is currently available for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Grab now if you're not too busy stuffing your face with Borderlands 2.
