Reports are already coming in that Capcom has shipped an estimated 4.5 million copies of Resident Evil 6 to retailers worldwide. Now this doesn't mean they actually sold that many copies to consumers, it just means that by the end of the week it won't be surprising if Capcom has to ship out a few million more copies.

According to Polygon, Capcom Japan sent out word that they have officially shipped 4.5 million copies around the world to Europe, North America and Japan.

The game has been slightly mired in media controversy over wildly mixed review scores, going as low as 3 out of a 10 to as high as a 95 out of 100. The mixed scores gave pause to the typical industry standard of reviewing AAA titles, which usually settle out with high scores as a courtesy to publishers and prompting to work as a true disservice to consumers, no less.

Resident Evil 6's dirty laundry aired with little recourse from Capcom, as the executive producer simply mentioned that the company can't please everyone and that the game had to appeal to a mass audience.

The game's review scores has certainly kept the game a hot topic in the world of video game news, prompting for all sorts of continued conversation on whether Capcom has a real success on their hands or if the divergence from the horror-survival roots could prove to be the franchise's demise.

Gaming Blend's own review score of Resident Evil 6 middled out at a respectable 3.5 out of 5, stating that it was trying to do too much and not necessarily excelling at any one thing in particular.

I'm very curious to see what the sales numbers will look like when the NPD charts release later this month. It could tell a very interesting story. In the meantime, you can pick up a copy of Resident Evil 6 in North America, Europe and Japan for the Xbox 360 and PS3. The PC rendition is potentially scheduled to release sometime in 2013, as Capcom actually wants to avoid the Resident Evil 4 PC porting fiasco.
