Darkspore is an action RPG, a genre which doesn't seem like the forte of Spore developer Maxis. However, during the game's panel at Comic Con, the team tried to assure gamers they knew what they were doing.

Lead designer Thomas Vu said that many members of the Darkspore team are not only passionate about action RPG's but also have some experience on titles in that genre. They've recruited additional staffers with similar skillsets. Later on, one of the panelists mentioned that some of the devs worked on Diablo III.

Maxis is also getting help from BioWare, another EA-owned studio. Darkspore team admitted that their game is a bit less story-oriented than, say, Mass Effect. However, BioWare's one of the biggest RPG studios around so they're probably a good source of advice.
